3 Key Strategies to Score a 7 in IB Chemistry

As an IB Chemistry teacher with over 20 years of experience, Iโ€™ve seen many students aim for that perfect 7 โ€” and achieve it. The truth is, scoring a 7 isnโ€™t about being a โ€œnatural genius.โ€ Itโ€™s about having the right approach, good study habits, and exam techniques that work.

In this article, Iโ€™m sharing the three most important strategies I teach my students to help them not just pass but excel in IB Chemistry.

1. Truly Understand the Syllabus

IB Chemistry is not about cramming facts the night before the exam โ€” itโ€™s about understanding how things work.

When you study:

  • Ask โ€œwhy,โ€ not just โ€œwhat.โ€ Donโ€™t just memorize that metals conduct electricity โ€” understand why electrons are free to move in a metal lattice.
  • Look for connections between topics. Youโ€™ll notice that bonding, energetics, and equilibrium often overlap in questions. The better you see the connections, the easier those tricky questions will feel.
  • Check the syllabus often. IB provides a detailed syllabus with learning outcomes. Use it like a checklist so you donโ€™t miss anything.

2. Practice, Practice, Practice โ€“ Especially Application Questions

Many students do well in learning definitions but lose marks when the question looks โ€œdifferent.โ€ Thatโ€™s why you need to practice applying your knowledge to new situations.

Hereโ€™s how to do it:

  • Past papers are your best friend. Solve questions after finishing each topic, not just at the end of the year.
  • Focus on Paper 3 (Data-based). Learn to read graphs, spot patterns, and write good conclusions. This section is where many students lose marks, but with practice, you can turn it into your strength.
  • Work under exam conditions. Time yourself and learn how to write clear, direct answers without overthinking.

3. Build Consistency and a Solid Exam Plan

Getting a 7 is about consistency, not last-minute effort.

  • Create a simple study schedule. Break the syllabus into small chunks and review them weekly.
  • Use visuals. Draw diagrams, mind maps, and flowcharts to make topics easier to remember.
  • Fix your weak areas early. Donโ€™t wait until the revision period โ€” start working on them as soon as you find them.
  • Practice exam technique. Learn to manage your time and practice how to answer in IBโ€™s style. Sometimes a great answer is lost because itโ€™s not written the way the examiner expects.

With the right approach, you can absolutely get a 7. Stay consistent, focus on understanding, and practice regularly โ€” your hard work will pay off!
